Implementing KWL Strategies in ESL Reading
As we experienced a large staff turnover after the academic year, we received feedback from students and parents that the current teaching methods did not have the critical thinking previous teachers employed. After class observations, it was determined that the new teachers leaned more heavily on "traditional" teaching methods, which utilized more oral chanting and rote learning. To address the students' concerns and provide remediation for the staff, several veteran staff were asked to host workshops on more research-based instruction.

Usage: All new staff, management, and some veteran teachers
Result: Strategies such as KWL were more widely employed in subsequent lessons. Parents noticed the remediation techniques and appreciated the school taking action to address them. Students reported the classes being more interesting than before.
